Waterside Garden
Seattle, Washington

The problem:

This client wanted spaces to indulge her passion for flowers. Her husband had few requirements for the garden except that it be "a riot of color". Because this garden area is right on the water, the water table is high which would lead to root rot for some of their favorite plants. So beds with adequate drainage were required. They also wanted freedom from the hassle of maintaining a lawn.

What we did:

We replaced the lawn with a stone patio. Fine-textured ground cover, such as woolly thyme, was planted between some of the granite flagstones to soften the look. To solve the problem of wet feet for lilacs and other favorites that like well-drained soil, we used granite to build a raised bed along the water's edge. We imported soil and bermed the rest of the planting beds, thus giving plants room to grow above the water table. The client's enthusiasm for flowering shrubs, perennials and bulbs have certainly filled her husband's request for color. They now have a pleasant seating area, surrounded by flowers, where they can enjoy their view of the water.
