The problem:

This client wanted her garden redone because she felt it didn't have "any rhyme or reason" to it. She had a large collection of plant material but it wasn't organized in a way that pleased her. She also needed better access into the garden. It was fenced on three sides. The fourth side (along the patio) was a rockery planted so solidly that the only way into the garden was a narrow path at one end. She also felt that the look of their small garden pond could be improved.

What we did:

We improved the traffic flow through the garden by removing the fence along both sides of the driveway and by adding two arbors: one from the driveway into the main garden and another at the edge of the patio with a set of stone steps leading into the garden. We moved plants out of the center of the rockery to make room for the steps. We moved a lot of the perennials that looked lost by themselves in the garden and put them into large containers on the patio. In the main garden, we arranged a combination of new and existing small trees, shrubs and grasses to create a garden with color and interest throughout the year. We rearranged the stone and plantings around the pond to make it blend more naturally into the landscape. The client has also built a deck off the second story of the house which looks down into the garden.
